DIY Wedding Smore Favors

What you’ll need:

To make the bags you’ll need lace trim in different widths, muslin, and ribbon. For s’mores you need chocolate, marshmallows and Graham crackers (they can be purchased in bulk online or at places like Costco or Sam’s Club)

Instructions for Lace Bags:

1. Cut the 6 inch wide toile into 12 inch pieces

2. Cut the 1/2 wide Lace into 6 inch pieces

3. Sew the lace onto the toile about 4 1/2 inches from the bottom of the toile.

4. Fold the toile length wise so that it is a 6 inch square with the lace on the inside of the toile

5. Sew the sides of the toile with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, with the top left open.

6. Turn the bag right side out and it is ready to be filled and tied off with a ribbon or string!

Instructions for Muslin and Lace Bags:

1. Cut the muslin in to 6 x 6 inch rectangles

2. Cut the 4 inch wide lace into 6 inch pieces

3. Sew the lace pieces to each end of the muslin

4. Fold the rectangle length wise with the outside facing in.

5. Sew the sides with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, with the top left open.

6. Turn the bag right side out and it is ready to be filled and tied off with a ribbon or string!

The no-sew method:

We thought we would chime in and add an idea to this project to those who don’t have a sewing machine. Buy a few yards of tulle and cut 6×6 square tiles and tie with lace or lace applique trim. For peace of mind, be sure to buy non-flammable tulle. For muslin bags, you can buy them at Uline.

I havent been posting much on this blog, I know. Its sad. BUT now that one of my BFF's is planning her wedding and I'm going to help her, weddings are back on my radar.

I came across this one on A Mountain Bride today and just had to share the scenery. How lucky is this couple?

I would have loved to see the rest of thier wedding! Just goes to show, simple is beautiful!

Our 1st Anniversary

Since I wasn't going to be able to celebrate our anniversary with my darling husband on our actual anniversary, we celebrated it the night before. The actual day of I had a competition over an hour away and was scheduled to get home very late.

I had debated about what gift to get the Mr. but then we decided to skip the gifts. We didn't miss them either.

Instead of gifts I wanted to recreate the meal from our wedding that we barely got to eat. I called up our fabulous and favorite caterer and asked for the same meal for two people. I picked it up the Friday afternoon before we were to celebrate and she even gave it to us for free!

We got two fillet mignon steaks, chicken cordon blue, macaroni and cheese and twice stuffed over sized potatoes.

We sat outside on the patio for dinner, which worked out perfectly because it was beautiful out! The weather was a little breezy and cool.

For dessert we had saved our cake topper from the wedding. Year old cake... umm... yeah... Its tradition so we played along. Actually, Mr. P made me play along. Since I knew that cake wasn't going to be good, i ordered cupcakes from the same place that did them for our wedding also.

We used our wedding flutes for a toast with some wine ( and beer) and dug into the cupcakes after trying a tiny sliver of our wedding cake.

It was such a relaxing night, I wish we could have more of those!

First Anniversary Gifts

Our first year anniversary is coming up! I'm going to be cliche' and say that I cant believe its been a year already! My dilemma is this: traditionally the first anniversary gift if paper. Paper?! Apparently who ever made up this tradition wasn't thrilled at being married and wanted to get rid of their other half. Paper?! Really?!

So to follow tradition I'm looking for paper ideas for my hubs.

We don't collect unnecessary knick knacks or any of that stuff so that's our second problem. What will we not want to throw away but that is exciting enough to be given for a year of marriage?

Since I'm not longer planning my own wedding, it has been a little tough to come up with great wedding advice. I was scrolling through 100 Layer Cake and saw this idea and just had to post it.

"One fun idea is to take some neon stickers and mark the important wedding locations, or your favorite eateries or activities on the map. You could also print your text onto labels and attach them to the map."

I love this idea, its genius! You can even print maps from your computer for free, or if you stop by a highway station or city hall they always have them out. This would cost you next to nothing, and your guests would know your fav. spots and activities.

There are so many options for wedding ceremonies. When I had told one of the florist I had consulted with that I wanted an all white ceremony, she looked at me like I had 3 heads. Whats wrong with white? Its classic, timeless and clean. It represents purity.

What more could you want from a wedding ceremony? Granted, white isn't for everyone. I obviously did not have an all white ceremony. Although if you were to go all white, this Easter lily alter is totally DIY-able.

I wish I'd known how many times I'd have to write my address when I first got engaged. Vista Print offers super cheap ( free) return address labels and you only pay the shipping ( about $3.00!). trust me, no matter where you get them from, you will use them!

The first time you have to write your address over 20 times you'll wish you had some. I got in the habit of carrying them in my purse!

Chances are you've heard of Save - On - Crafts. It's ultra inexpensive crafting supplies, including apothecary jars, cake stands, lights, chair ties, branches, and what seems like everything bu the kitchen sink.

When I was planing my wedding I looked through tons of the stuff on their site and it was super helpful, although they've added a few more rustic things to it now. :( Here's a couple of the things I could have used a few months ago.

Saving Time & Sanity

Let's face it, when you plan a wedding or even get engaged you get TONS of e-mails. My advice: create a separate e-mail address through a free service such as Yahoo, google, etc.

I created one through yahoo and that's where any wedding related things were sent. Receipts from online purchases were never lost, e-mails from our vendors were saved there and it was like my little online filing cabinet. It made it so much easier to sort through my normal email inbox because I didn't chance deleting anything important.

Wedding Morning.

We've gotten all of our pro pics back and I've sorted out my favorites. I'm going to try to break down each section of the wedding and explain what happen and how we did things.

Let's start at the beginning.

The morning of the wedding I woke up at my MOH's house and we all get our stuff together and headed out. I still needed to get my eyebrows done so Kimmy & I headed to the salon and Jenn & Priscilla went for coffee.

We gathered at my parents house to get ready. The hair dresser was running late but everything got done in perfect time. My parents, Ronnie and the rest of my family had gone to the hall that morning to help set up and bring over the supplies for the day.

Once the hair dresser got to the house, things started going smoothly. The MOH's and my bridesmaid all got their hair done before me so I had to patiently wait. Well sort of patiently anyways. We started playing go fish and peeking at wedding gifts.. SHHH!

We had a friend do our makeup for free. It saved us tons of money and no one was the wiser. I'd def. recommend saving on makeup if you have the right products at home. Other brides talk about shine free / camera ready makeup but MAC did a great job on its own.

Our Rehersal and Dinner

The rehersal started in the dead heat of South Florida and we were short two groomsmen so Frankie's sister had to sub in as a best man. Thanks Amy!

Afterwardswe had the rehersal dinner at my parents house where we proceeded to feed about 30 people with BBQ style food. There was also a lot of alcohol... well a little too much...

I drank too much wine, then mixed in shots of Jack when friends and family were toasting us.. bad idea..

Then a few friends came back to our house after the dinner for a few more drinks... so then i had some southern comfort too...

Neddless to say, I spent the next day puking my brains out until about 4pm... I missed the bridesmaids lunch and mani/pedi's!

It seems as the wedding gets closer the less I post! This week has not been the best. I've taken this week and next week off of work to prepare for the wedding this Saturday. Sunday night I had planned to do a makeup trial at Jenns house and then hang out with my lovely ladies, but Sunday night my Mom had to rush to the ER because my grandfather wasnt breathing. There was nothing anyone could do, we'd lost him.

So my start to the wedding week hasnt gone so good. We buried my Grandfather yesterday.

And I'm getting sick. I've got a sore throat.

So hopefully there will be wedding stuff to come, if you get bored waiting ;) you can always check out my other blog, where this blog will be continued after the wedding.

In the news

The Sun Sentinel ( our local newspaper) may be at my wedding! Well not because they know me, or think im special, but because of where I'm having the wedding. The location of the wedding used to be a fancy resteraunt that a lot of people would go to for special occasions. It was even featured in a scene in Scarface.

The Long Key Nature center used to be called the Kapok Tree. It was renovated and reopened as a natural area and park just in recent years. The reporter who would like to do a story on us was looking for a family who had parents that went there and then the younger generation was also going there. He wanted a history of the place with a sentimental twist. Since my Mom had gone there, and now I'm getting married there, the reporter picked us!

He may be making an appearance and writing about the wedding in the newspaper! =)

Playing with sticks.

We are doing our own version of this photo stand. Instead of pictures, we are doing our escort cards, so we needed to find a way to D-I-Y it, of course.

First we got our pots out and mixed plaster of paris into them.

Once everything was mixed we put the sticks into the pots. Ironically my parents had carved walking sticks at the house that worked perfectly for this project. I'm sure you would be able to use any tree limb that was relatively straight though.

Once the sticks were in the plaster, we needed a way to set them so they would dry straight. All I did was punch a hole into the bottom of some small boxes and place them over the sticks so that they would hold everything up straight.

It's like mini goodness that you can make way ahead, freeze, and then bake the day of.

Anti-Bridezilla

I'm now 20 days from the wedding and I'm excited but over it. Did anyone else feel like that? There is still somethings to finish up and details to go over but I'm not motivated to do them. Yesterday we lost a groomsman. Yea, 3 weeks before the wedding he bails. It works out for us though because Frankie had someone else he would have rather had as a groomsman anyway, so we are back to four.

I'm also glad I didn't do the programs early like I had wanted to. I have no clue about ceremony music, and since our bridal party just changed, it would have been a disaster. Maybe we just wont have programs. I'm not sure I want them now anyways.

All of the projects that I started so enthusiastic about and never started are going to stay in wedding dreamland. After buying the house and planning this wedding for a year and a half, I'm ready for it to be the day already. I'm not growing any more excited as the day gets closer, I've been excited for 15 months.

As it gets closer, people are asking me if I'm nervous. Who has time to be nervous when they know if they want to marry someone? If the person makes you happy, you're a team, and they understand you and support you there should be no reason to be nervous. Maybe I'm just naive and young, but I'm just not nervous. Is that such a bad thing?

but is only our table settings! I used the left over bridal shower plates as our mock wedding tables so that I would be able to see where everyone will be sitting.

I cut out as many pieces of paper as there are guests, wrote a name on each one, and then taped them to the according table. It's like a giant puzzle and I actually had fun doing it. We've gotten back all but 2 rsvp's ! When does that EVER happen!? It took about an hour and a 1/2 but its done, unless people change their minds about coming...

Bachelorette Party Part I

My bachelorette party was Saturday night. We took sooo many pictures that I'm going to do this in a 3 part series lol. I'll keep the pictures PG-13 ;)

The night started with dinner at a resteraunt called Brio about 15 mins away from my house. It was an Italian place so the tables had the white paper on the tables. Jenn had fun drawing on it.

We ate some yummy food, made friends with the waiter and got free dessert! Yay!

We bought the pretty wedding ring stamps for both the outer and response envelopes. Well, luck would have it that it wasn't enough postage and we had to purchase another 17 cents in stamps per invite! So now they won't be so pretty...

Ceremony Circle

The idea is to have a cirlce of flowers at the end of the ceremony aisle. Mr. P will be waiting within the circle, along with our officiant.

When I get to the end of the aisle, I will walk into the cirlce with the Mr. and we will say our vows.

I had started a string of flowers a few weeks ago, and never completed it. Ronnie came over yesterday, picked up what I had started and went to numerous stores buying the rest of the flowers to finish it.

Sure enough, she had it finished in only a couple hours last night.

She dropped by the house this morning before I went to work to drop it off! Here is part of it:

Make the wrist corsages for Mom, Grandma, etc...

Print the escort cards...

The butter, explained.

Yes, I used a regular cookie cutter I found at Michael's.

You can freeze butter. After cutting them out, we put them back in the fridge so they could harden to normal state, then put them in wax lined freezer containers and put them in the freezer.

The morning of the wedding, we will put them on the tables, and they will be defrosted by the time guests get to the reception.

Martha Stewart leads people to do crazy things! Since I'm having a fall wedding, and its AAAALLLLL about the details, we jumped in head first.

We are creating leaf shaped butters for all the tables. What the f*** does that mean, you might ask? Well let's see...

3 lbs of butter...

Cut in half, and laid out on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper...

and left out of the fridge for about an hour...

makes it very easy to roll out flat and cut out leaves!

Ta Da!

All of the leaves will be placed on saucers and put on the reception tables for the rolls. :) Crazy? Maybe. Easy? definitely.

I adore this ceremony set-up. I love the old barrel to hold the ceremony accessories and the ribbons hanging from the trees with only a few flowers.

This is another fun idea I've seen before, but I couldn't find the picture I previously had. Have you photographer take a separate picture of you and your groom, and then decorate your reception site with random fun pictures like the one above.

Don't be overly ambitious

DIY weddings are awesome, and not many people can argue that. Although, just because they are DIY doesn't mean they are c-h-e-a-p.

The biggest danger of a budget wedding is ambition. Does that sound bad? Yes, but its true. Let me explain.

This may be why I'm in a wedding induced stupor lately with no more motivation to do projects for a little while.

When I first got engaged, I had the whole to-do list printed from every wedding website and magazine. Then I went through and crossed things off I didn't need/want and wrote in things that I wanted. And then I got to work.

Well i went to Micheal's, target, etc and bought everything I thought I needed. In hindsight I could have done something more cheaply if Id waited and thought about what I was doing and mapped out a plan. Always have a plan.

You can be overly ambitious and want to get to work so badly that you don't pay attention to the logistics of the task at hand. Beware!

Stumped.

I've been home sick today and I've been thinking about everything that still needs to be done for the wedding. I'm not motivated at all. I've got a whole list of things I would like to do, but probably wont. For some reason the motivation to add to this wedding is gone. I had thought about the lighting and don't know how we would afford it, so we probably won't have it.

Our initial dishes got here last week. I thought you guys might be intrested in seeing them, since I was so excited about them. They are a lot smaller then I'd thought they would be, but then again I'd never seen the L-O-V-E dishes in person either.

*** Each dish measures 6" high and 3/4" deep.

Official "guest book"

We did it, we officially picked if we will have a guest book or not. We chose not.

Mr. P is a HUGE New England Patriots fan ( as if you haven't heard that a 1000 times before), and he's got me to like the team too. Since six months of the year revolve around football games, it was only fitting that we chose something that portrayed our interests.

We bought a white Pats jersey and will have everyone sign the jersey in blue and silver sharpies. No they will not have a lot of room to write messages, but that's OK. When we move we plan to frame the jersey and put it on the wall in the "man room". ( haha that's what I call the room Mr. P gets to put all his manly stuff in and watch football games in :) )

Our Dj does uplighting for weddings and events also. I called for a quote for the big ol' open space we're using and it was about $200 more then I wanted to spend.

Our venue requires all of our vendors to have a certain amount of insurance. When i first booked the park and hall, there was a 16 page single spaced print out of approved vendors, that list is now down to 3 pages.

None of my vendors are on it.

Therefore I need to make some phone calls first thing in the morning to my caterer and DJ and make sure they have the correct amount, and have them fax their information to our venue.

Crap.

There have been a couple blogs lately that have been posting about those of us with budget weddings. East Side bride posted about this saying, " The length of a marriage is inversely proportional to the cost of the wedding", and how it's bullsh*t. Ok yes, that saying is BS. But that's not why I'm doing my wedding for 10k.

Reverse budget snobbery may be real, but I think the only people who see it that way are the ones spending much more money on their weddings. It may be a competition for some, but I'm sure for 99% of us budget/eco friendly/ offbeat brides do it A) because they have to B) as a challenge to themselves or C) because the material things are not that important to them.

Do I think that the cost of a wedding has anything to do with the marriage? NO, unless it puts the couple into debt. Then it may cause problems that stem from financial issues.

Everyone's wedding will be different, regardless of what price you pay. Small weddings can still be fun and stylish. Huge weddings are amazing, they too, challenge our creativity and push the borders on what the wedding industry will be like a year or two from now. It's almost like wedding evolution.

If you have the money for a $50k + wedding, more power to you, you're keeping the economy going. If you don't, and you have to budget yourself and DIY many projects, then awesome too, welcome to my DIY wedding blog.

I'm still going to drool over those huge soirees, and I'm going to take notes from the budget ones.

All of this is my opinion, and I'm sorry if it offends you in anyway, but it's how I feel. I don't plan my wedding around whether I believe it will give me a better marriage, I do it because I want to.

All of your weddings will be beautiful in their own right, why should it matter how much you spend?

I hope everyone has had an awesome weekend. Mine is just now ending, and back to work I go tomorrow.

This weekend I got a lot of wedding stuff done! I've already posted about the centerpieces and invitations.

Today this is what I've got done:

2nd dress fitting ( looks soo much better now that it's fit for a vertically challenged girl!)
Booked the hairstylist for the wedding. - I never did an official hair trial, so lets keep our fingers crossed. She's played with my hair before and showed me how it will look, and I'm not asking for anything elaborate.
Started addressing envelopes ( my printer hates me!!!!!!)
Gave the shower list to Priscilla, as well as the registry inserts.
Gave the new bachelorette party invitation list to Priscilla also, those go out soon! ( although I don't know whats going to happen!?)
